As I’ve discussed in previous posts, sleep is essential for draining the brain of toxins linked to Alzheimer’s disease and for consolidating memories from the previous day. Getting a sufficient quantity and quality of sleep is not only a core component of health, but often an underappreciated one. But one of the smart watch’s most useful features is arguably what it monitors while you’re burning the fewest calories: your sleep. When you hear the word “Fitbit,” you probably think about logging steps, calories, and cardio. Combining the improved Apple Watch data with knowledge about your circadian rhythm, subjective sleep experience, and how to turn data into action-forward steps remains key to unlocking your optimal sleep health. If someone had told me a year ago that he sleeps with his watch on at night, I’d probably wonder just how eccentric of a personality I was dealing with. It’s simply a glimpse into an individual’s sleep patterns. Neither PSG nor wearables can give us perfect sleep data, although Apple’s OS9 upgrades certainly elevate the Apple Watch to compete with other wearables. However, it’s important to note that while PSG is the gold standard for sleep measurement, it too can be prone to error. And we look forward to reviewing the specifics of their sampling and data outcomes to see if there are any significant differences.Ĭomparing wearable data to polysomnography has become standard for wearables validation. It’s great news if Apple’s data truly reveals gold-standard accuracy. It is best monitored over a period of time (versus looking at a single measurement) in order for it to be a helpful metric in determining the quality of your sleep, including poor sleep and how easily you fall asleep.Īpple touts its sleep staging algorithm as based on “machine learning models … and validated against the clinical gold standard, polysomnography, with one of the largest and most diverse populations ever studied for a wearable.” That’s an impressive claim, given that data from Fitbit and Oura also showed a robust sampling of more than 500 (if you add up meta-analyses) and 100 people, respectively. HRV numbers will also vary by sleep stage, as well as from person to person, depending on your age, gender, and what’s going on in your life. Your HRV tends to be higher at night and lower during the day. HRV can fluctuate a lot throughout the day, depending on your stress levels, hydration, sleeping patterns, as well as changes in your emotions and activities. HRV refers to the variation in time between the beats of your heart, which can provide useful information about your resilience and your body’s adaptability to stress. Compared to polysomnography sleep studies (PSG), actigraphy data is usually more than 80% accurate for most people, and obviously more accessible and lower cost than a sleep study. ![]() Acceleromters cannot tell you specifics about sleep stages, but can confirm how long you sleep. Sleep researchers have been using accelerometer data for several years to measure sleep by using actigraphy watches. The deeper the sleep (as you progress from NREM stage 1 to stage 3) the less you’ll move around in your sleep, i.e., less muscle activity. The accelerometer data measures movement, which varies by sleep stage. ![]() This data combination is promising for increasing sleep staging and sleep data accuracy, especially for diagnosing insomnia. Apple is measuring sleep stages using a combination of accelerometer and heart-rate variability (HRV) data.Ĭombining these metrics has become standard in other wearables like Whoop, Fitbit, and Oura ring. Traditionally in sleep medicine, sleep stages are REM and Non-REM (non rapid eye movement, or NREM), with the latter divided into three sub-stages (NREM stages 1–3). ![]() The newest updates will, according to Apple, improve the sleep staging accuracy by further breaking down how much time you spend in 4 different sleep stages (which they’ve termed Awake, REM, Core, and Deep). awake, with few details or other data to help you understand your sleep. Previous versions of the Apple Watch only included estimates of your time in bed and when you were asleep vs. The Crescent Health team delved into the details, and here’s where we landed. ![]() This news sounds great, but if you have an Apple Watch you may be wondering how good is it at sleep quality assessment? What information will I gain about my sleep, including my deep sleep, from these updates, and how good is the sleep data? Earlier this month, at Apple’s 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference, the company announced improvements to the Apple Watch OS 9, including the addition of sleep staging to the smartwatch’s Sleep app and tracking capabilities.

Makeup artists Katey Denno, Gloria Noto, Fiona Stiles, and Rachel Estabrook are all riding the same wave as Black. Here reasoning is right on the mark: "Foundation is meant to even out your skin tone and reduce the appearance of blemishes, discoloration, and excess redness, so until you've applied your foundation, it’s hard to judge how much concealer you actually need to use."īlack also points out that the act of blending foundation over concealer often results in moving the concealer off of the area you originally intended to apply your coverage to, adding that this rings true regardless of which application tool you use. "I have always found that it makes far more sense to apply concealer after foundation," says Robin Black, makeup artist and Beauty Is Boring founder. (In fact, just one of the makeup artists advocates for using concealer first - and even then, he stipulates that his technique is circumstantial and depends on a person's complexion needs.) Why are so many makeup artists opting for this method? These pros backed up their position with plenty of excellent reasons. Nearly every expert fervently voted for applying your foundation first, then layering concealer over top. "By applying it last, you can get more time with the product and also apply powder to set everything in place." And on that note, we can further examine the more popular approach. On the flipside, when Avendaño is covering up blemishes on the skin, he agrees with the other experts, preferring to apply foundation first. "When someone has really dark circles or looks fatigued, I go in with a color-correcting concealer first, then use a foundation to even everything out, and then use another light layer of concealer if it still needs covering." Loading heavy bullets with these powders, and a few others, lowers velocities even more, but then there’s the matter of suitable rifling twist to stabilize such heavy, long bullets at subsonic speed. Light amounts of relatively fast burning powders intended primarily for handgun cartridges, like 2400, Unique and Red Dot, come close but do not quite generate that velocity level. So I have been playing Star Wars Battlefront 2 for the past 2 months using Gameranger and it's been a wonderful blast and at that time I didn't run into any issues at all with Winddows 10. Over the past week I have pulled a number of vector assets out of Illustrator designs as SVGs for a couple of projects, and I’m starting to get the process down. I know just enough to go into an Illustrator file, pull out the assets I need, and try not to screw anything else up in the process. The thing is, while I have been using Photoshop extensively for over 20 years, I’ve never really gotten the hang of Illustrator. Now, however, SVG is a viable - in fact, preferable, given its flexibility and smaller file size (plus the ability to hack the XML code right in the image files themselves) - alternative to multiple PNGs of every image. But until now I had still been pulling vector assets over into Photoshop and producing multiple carefully-sized versions of things like logos and custom icons. ![]() It’s great to get these assets as vectors that I can scale and size as I need in my build-out of high-res, responsive websites. ![]() In recent years, especially since Responsive Web Design (and high-resolution displays) took off, I’ve been receiving web designs more and more in Illustrator format, rather than Photoshop. With Internet Explorer 8 end of life coming on January 12, all kinds of new possibilities are opening up to us web developers who can finally start making use of technologies that have had wide support in modern browsers for years, but that we were reluctant to embrace because of the need for IE8-friendly workarounds.įor me, one of those things is SVG images. Where in the file before I saved it, there was a rectangle located 1 pixel (or I guess 1.1px) located below the start of the artboard (y = 0).Īlso would be nice if these edits of my reply would show up in the thread right away. So for example an element in the file will read: This does not make sense and I guess is throwing any other library or program reading these values, including illustrator itself). Subsequently all the poly, or line y values start at 160 or more. ViewBox is defined as x y width height value (but unit wise, lets not get into that here). ViewBox="0 160 792 292" enable-background="new 0 160 792 292" (enable-background is deprecated as far as I know) Some more digging revealed that for some reason illiustrator is writing in the svg header: Which means the only actual work around is to edit all of the values by hand in a text editor. Saved a new file and opened it in illustrator again.Īll the artwork is still moved down and halfway off the actual artboard (the artboard now does retain the actual size it was set to). I tried the workaround unchecking the responsive option. So instead of updating the camera raw plugin maybe fix this mayor bug (sorry for being cynical, but I pay enough for using professional software for vector generation and it doesnt even seem to be able to generate an open format vector format which is by now means new). And of course it is causing havoc when I try to use these svg files in a snap svg experiment. I set the artboard up, save the file, open it up again and the artboard has doubled in size. ![]() Also took me hours to figure out that illustrator was causeing this problem. Using the illustrator CC 2014, on mac osx and getting the same weirdness. This wasn't nessessary before the latest update. This works, but it's not right that we have to do this. Notepad if you're using windows, or the equivalent on MAC) You can save your SVG file, and then add these values into the tag yourself via a text editor (i.e. The width and height values are missing from the first svg tag (highlighted in code above).
